SINCE THE BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION'S INCEPTION IN 2001, TEAMS HAVE COMPETED FOR CASH PRIZES AND IN-KIND AWARDS SUCH AS OFFICE SPACE, LEGAL ADVICE, FULL PATENT APPLICATIONS, AND MARKETING/PR
The Southern Methodist University Business Plan Competition (BPC) aims to guide students who are aspiring entrepreneurs through the process of starting a business. By facilitating interaction between business, engineering, law, life sciences and arts students, the BPC exposes participants to potential collaborators from a variety of backgrounds. Our relationships with local entrepreneurs and venture capital professionals allow BPC competitors to learn first-hand how to write a business plan, pitch it to investors and develop the skills necessary to be a successful entrepreneur.
"We received in-kind donations to help with business formation, IP, market research, and office space. Cash prizes allowed us flexibility to cash flow our launch, and build traction before considering outside funding." - Sherrie Johnson “The BPC really allowed me to apply concepts I was learning in the classroom for the first time in a hands on experience. It helped me appreciate the intricacies of developing a feasible business plan and the most valuable experience of my 1st year.” - Alberto Lo
